What is a GST Calculator?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is applied at different rates — commonly 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% — depending on the category of goods or services. This calculator works both ways: add GST to a base price, or back-calculate the base price from a GST-inclusive amount.

This is useful for freelancers and small businesses quoting prices, or for anyone checking whether a listed 'inclusive of GST' price breaks down the way they expect.

Common GST Rates

  • 5% — essential goods and some services.
  • 12% and 18% — most standard goods and services (18% is the most common rate).
  • 28% — luxury and sin goods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between adding and removing GST?+

'Add GST' takes a base price and adds tax on top. 'Remove GST' takes a price that already includes GST and works backward to find the original base amount.

Why isn't GST removal just amount × rate?+

Because the entered amount already includes GST, you have to divide by (1 + rate) first to find the true base — multiplying by the rate directly would overstate the GST portion.

Do all products have the same GST rate?+

No — rates vary by category, from 0% (exempt) up to 28%, set by the GST Council.
